The right bra size

In principle, your bra size is to be determined from two different dimensions:

1. Underbust circumference (measured around the body below the bust)

Since BH sizes are offered in 5-step jumps, each size is assigned a tolerance of 5cm. For this reason, the closure of each bra means the possibility to adjust the width individually. It is advisable to wear the bra in the middle of the adjustment, if your breasts range exactly on a jump of 5. If your underbust measurement is lower, close the bra in the narrowest possible position, with a wider underbust measurement, the bra can be worn in the widest possible adjustment. You should try individually, which is the best way for you to wear your bra, because the comfort is here the most important criterium.

2. Chest circumference (measured around the body at the strongest point of the bust)

The cup size is obtained from the difference between the two dimensions. However, the cup alone does not say anything about the size of the breasts, because the bust increases proportionally to the breasts circumference. The bra size is obtained only from the underbust measurement and the difference.

With the help of these features, you can control whether your bra fits properly:

  • The bra should be placed horizontally around your body and the closure must not slip up. If it does so, the width of the underbust measurement is too big.
  • Have your arms over your head. If the breast slips under the bra and the underwire slides up, the cup is too small.
  • Does the underwire surround the breast or does it sit somewhere on the chest? Should it sit or press on the chest, the cup is too small or the shape of the underwire form is not the right one for you.
  • The underwires give a support from below and from the side. You should not feel it while wearing it. They must neither press on the ribs, nor pierce or scrub in the sides and in the front center.
  • The ends of the underwire should divide the breasts at the front and press against the skin without pressing.
  • The upper cup closure should be smooth on the skin without cutting.
  • The underbust shell should be strong enough for larger breasts to ensure the support function.
  • The straps should be pleasantly soft and wide enough for the bra size so that they do not cut into the skin.

No matter which method you use to determine your bra size, please consider your individual physique and proportions. A very narrow or very broad back can lead to "adulterated" measurements and determine the wrong bra size.

If the right size is found, the question of the bra shape arises. The underwires have a good supporting function, but are uncomfortable for some women. Especially for smaller cups, a bra with a stable underbust band can suffice. The same is also true for bustiers, which are marvelous eye-catchers. Balconette bras are ideal to emphasize the décolleté, as the straps are located far out on the sides of cups. The cups consist of half or ¾-cups. They are therefore less suitable for large breasts. Bras without or with transparent straps are perfect for ball gowns and shoulder-free shirts. Push-up bras and minimizers cover small or large busts.
